The Kohlmaiers' inseparable relationship with furniture design dates back to the days of carriages and horse-drawn carts, long before the first cars or telephones found their way into the tranquil region of Carinthia, where Rudolf Kohlmaier, great-grandfather of the current owners Peter and Bernd, registered his business as a saddler and upholsterer in 1884.

In addition to horsehair mattresses and upholstered furniture, the pioneer of the family business earned his money with saddles and harnesses at that time, and later also with car upholstery and paintwork.

With Horst's sons Peter and Bernd, a new generation finally took the helm in the 1980s and 90s and continues to run the traditional Kohlmaier company with passion to this day.
Even after Rudolf's death in 1947, the company remained in family hands thanks to his son Adolf and nephew Horst, pictured here (center) after passing his master craftsman's examination.

Peter Kohlmaier, a trained upholsterer and wallpaperer, and his brother Bernd Kohlmaier, a cabinetmaker, have been running the company for many years.
Since 2022, Sarah Kirschner, daughter of Peter Kohlmaier, has been part of the company and, as the fifth generation, brings a contemporary perspective to the tradition of craftsmanship.
